Candidiasis, commonly known as a yeast infection, manifests itself with itching and a discharge resembling cottage cheese in the vagina. The predominant causative agent is often Candida albicans. Following itching in the vulva, there may be swelling and redness. Fungal infections typically occur when the body’s resistance is compromised. Factors facilitating fungal growth include pregnancy, antibiotic use, wearing nylon underwear, tight clothing, vaginal douching, obesity, birth control pills, local allergens, chronic cervicitis, and radiation.
Diagnosis
In many cases, the expertise of a trained eye is sufficient, and rarely, additional tests are necessary.
Treatment
While treatment is generally straightforward, the condition can recur frequently. In cases of recurring yeast infections, improvement in hygienic conditions is essential alongside treatment.
